Fixed Deposit Tips & Advice

Longer Terms = Higher Rates
Banks typically offer higher interest rates for longer deposit terms as your money is locked in for a longer period.
Power of Compound Interest
Compound interest earns interest on both your principal amount and previously earned interest, maximizing your returns.
Deposit Insurance Protection
Bank deposits up to Rs. 1.1 million are protected by the Deposit Insurance Scheme in Sri Lanka, ensuring your money is safe.
Consider Tax Implications
Interest income from fixed deposits may be subject to withholding tax. Consider the after-tax returns when comparing options.

Fixed deposit rates in Sri Lanka: where they stand in mid-2026

Rates are climbing again. The average weighted fixed deposit rate moved from 8.31% in November 2025 to 8.58% by April 2026, and the prime lending rate sits near 9.58% — banks are competing for deposits, and it shows in the table below. Licensed commercial banks currently pay roughly 6% to 10% per annum on 12-month deposits, while licensed finance companies stretch to 11–12.6% to compensate for their smaller balance sheets.

Rates shown are per annum with interest at maturity, as published in mid-2026; banks revise them without notice, so treat the table as a map of who is competitive rather than a quote.

Banks versus finance companies: what the extra 2–3% buys

The pattern in the table is no accident. State giants like BOC and People's Bank pay the least and carry an implicit state backstop. Private commercial banks cluster around 10% at 12 months. Finance companies such as Softlogic Finance and Commercial Credit pay a visible premium — that premium is the price of additional risk, not free money. The safety net underneath all licensed institutions is the Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance Scheme, which covers up to Rs. 1,100,000 per depositor per institution. If you are placing more than that, splitting deposits across institutions keeps every rupee inside the covered limit.
